Novo Nordisk confirms NovoMix study

The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) was on hand to receive results showing that that NovoMix 30 is associated with fewer nocturnal and major hypoglycaemic events than biphasic human insulin (BHI).

The study comprised of nine clinical trials comparing NovoMix 30 with BHI, given to 1,674 type 2 and 151 type 1 diabetes patients.

Novo Nordisk’s bisphasic insulin aspart was shown to be associated with a 35 per cent relative risk reduction of nocturnal hypoglycaemia and a 59 per cent relative risk reduction of major hypoglycaemic events.

Dr Jaime Davidson, Endocrine & Diabetes Association of Texas, indicated that these results would assure many of those who live in fear of of a hypoglycaemic event.

“It is particularly a concern at night when glucose levels can drop more frequently and go undetected by the sleeping individual. Any treatment which can be relied upon to cause as few episodes of hypoglycaemia as possible during these periods is welcome,” he added.

Last year, Novo Nordisk announced that the EU Commission had altered its label for NovoMix 30 and had approved alterations for the drug’s dosage guidelines in order for patients with type-2 diabetes to use NovoMix.
