GSK announces Tykerb plus Xeloda data
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced the publication of new data on Tykerb (lapatinib) plus Xeloda (capecitabine) for the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer that has spread to the brain and had progressed on Tykerb alone.
The company reports that 20 per cent of patients treated in the phase II study receiving Tykerb plus capecitabine experienced a minimum of 50 per cent volumetric reduction in their measurable brain metastases.
GSK notes that this is an important development, as up to a third of women suffering from HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer can develop brain metastases.
These results are being presented alongside other trials involving Tykerb at this year’s San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
Christine Druther, founder and president of the HER2 Support Group, said: “I know first hand that HER2-positive breast cancer can have unique, difficult-to-treat complications.
“Brain metastases can be particularly devastating for patients, as they may cause blurred vision, speech impairments and can limit patients’ ability to engage in even simple day-to-day activities.”
She added that her organisation is anticipating the results of all research into the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer and complications associated with the disease.
In December 2006, GSK announced the publication of phase III clinical trial data showing that treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer patients with Tykerb and Xeloda is more effective than treatment solely with Xeloda.
