GSK and Theravance launch asthma study

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Theravance have announced the launch of a series of phase IIB studies which look to advance two compounds in the treatment of asthma.

The asthma dose-optimisation studies will focus on the lead inhaled corticosteroid GW685698 (‘698) and the lead long-acting beta agonist GW642444 (‘444) as part of the Horizon programme which looks to develop a next-generation combination product.

GSK initiated the enrolment process for both the ‘698 and the ‘444 trials last month with both clinical programmes looking to determine the most effective doses to be taken into phase III combination studies.

Darrell Baker, senior vice-president of the respiratory medicines development centre at GSK, highlighted that the programme was progressing well and that the company were pleased to have two strong assets to advance in the studies.

“Both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] are serious, debilitating diseases where there remains a considerable unmet need. We believe through this programme we will introduce a meaningful option for the treatment of patients with these conditions,” he added.

In a recent phase II study, ‘698 showed once-a-day efficacy in patients with moderate asthma.

On New Year’s Eve, GSK announced the results of a head-to-head study comparing Seretide (salmeterol/fluticasone propionate) and Handihaler (tiotropium bromide) as a treatment for patients with COPD.
