From LA to Llanberis: Siemens moves operations

Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics has confirmed that it will move part of its operations from Los Angeles to the north-west Wales town of Llanberis.

The move will see the company double its capacity with the expansion of its biotech plant at a slate quarry in Gwynedd, providing an extra 200 jobs for the region, reports BBC.

Siemens, which produces a range of products including medical testing kits, has explained that the move was a “purely economic decision” with operations shifting from Los Angeles to concentrate manufacturing and distribution at Llanberis.

The medical company highlighted that the Californian facility was only partially owned by the firm whereas the Gwynedd site is wholly-owned.

Restructuring is expected to take two years with the extra jobs adding to a current workforce of around 300.

Steve Britton, managing director of Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, commented: We plan to double our production capability by hiring new employees and adding highly-automated equipment without expanding the footprint of the facility”

He added that the move would secure operations at the site for the “medium to long term”.

Earlier this month, Siemens announced it had received clearance for marketing and sale of the Artiste Solution – a linear accelerator specifically engineered for adaptive radiation therapy.
