Thermo Fisher Scientific granted FDA approval for MRSA test

Thermo Fisher Scientific has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its Spectra MRSA test designed to screen for the ‘superbug’ screen for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

According to the company, Spectra utilises the highest Positive Predictive Value commercially available for MRSA screening, ensuring that it provides accurate results within 24 hours.

It added that the Spectra MRSA is ready-to-use and can easily be adopted to any environment – enabling continuous testing of patients.

"The need for more aggressive prevention measures to stop the spread of MRSA means that healthcare facilities are looking for cost-effective ways to test more patients, around the clock," said Marijn Dekkers, president and chief executive officer of Thermo Fisher Scientific.
