Continued investment in animal science ‘vital’
A leading animal scientist has highlighted the importance of continuing and improved investment in animal science.
Professor Geoff Simm, president of the British Society of Animal Science, made his comments at a reception at the Scottish Parliament.
He stated that, although funding supplied through the Scottish government remained consistent, funds from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs had declined by around 20 per cent.
“British animal science has achieved a great deal and we believe we need good animal science now more than ever to meet future challenges, such as climate change and soaring demand for food,” the professor added.
Last month, Professor Simm attended a reception at Westminster to make the same points.
He asserted that the future of many internationally renowned animal science research organisations relied on Defra funding, urging ministers to recognise the importance of such money to research and development in Britain.
