BDHF supports armed forces’ smiles

The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) is to team up with the Defence Dental Services (DDS) organisation to boost oral health among the armed forces.

DDS is part of the Ministry of Defence and has joined forces with the BDHF as part of National Smile month, online publication Dentistry.co.uk reports.

The move means that troops and army personnel can benefit from discounts on campaign materials and for some dental health products.

Amanda Oakey, head of sales and marketing for the BDHF, commented that her organisation is pleased it can help make a difference to the dental health of British troops.

“By ensuring that people in the armed forces are aware of the (often underrated) importance of the value of good oral healthcare, we hope to make a real difference to the overall health of these important service personnel,” she added.

National Smile Month begins in Britain and the US on May 18th and runs until June 17th.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the Foundation, recently remarked that there is a developing amount of evidence which suggests that people with gum disease have increased levels of risk to sicknesses such as heart attacks and diabetes.

However, he stated, gum disease is preventable by improving dental health.
