Randox announces new renal function tests

Randox Laboratories has announced four new tests for the assessment of renal function.

The international diagnostics company has developed two tests for creatinine – the standard marker for renal function.

Levels of creatinine in the blood rise when there is kidney damage.

The firm has also developed microalbumin and total kidney urinary protein tests to be used in the detection of proteinuria – where kidney damage allows large proteins to enter the urine.

A company statement said: "Total urinary protein measurement is important for conditions associated with an increased risk of renal failure such as renal disease, diabetes, essential hypertension and cardiac decomposition.

"Randox’s total urinary protein test shows equal reactivity with albumin and globulin, has ready-to-use liquid reagent and includes a standard," it continued.

The company was founded in 1982 by Dr Peter Fitzgerald and now claims to be a multi-million pound business employing 600 people, including 185 research scientists.
