Baxter announces health prize winner

A scientist’s research into the causes of heart disease and other illnesses had earned him a prize.

Professor Michael G Marmot has been awarded the William B Graham Prize for Health Services Research by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and the Baxter International Foundation.

Mr Marmot has led research on health inequalities for the past three decades and is the director of the International Institute for Society and Health and a Medical Research Council research professor of epidemiology and public health at the University College London.

In 2000 he was knighted for services to epidemiology and understanding health inequalities and is active in several organisations looking into issues such as ageing and social morbidity.

Mr Marmot said he was “delighted” to receive the prize, which he described as “prestigious”, going on to say it highlighted the work of many people other than himself.

However he added: “Improving the health of those who are socially disadvantaged is a reward in itself.”

Baxter focuses on the areas of bioscience, medication delivery and renal healthcare.
