Forest, Almirall announce COPD findings

Forest and Almirall have announced positive results in clinical studies of aclidinium bromide in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

AB is a novel, long-acting anticholinergic for the treatment of COPD and the data from the four studies was presented at the 2008 international conference of the American Thoracic Society.

Lawrence S Olanoff, president and chief operating officer of Forest Laboratories, said there were still “significant unmet needs” in the treatment of COPD.

“These efficacy and safety data from the phase II trials are very encouraging,” he added.

“We look forward to the completion of Acclaim I and II trials and continuing the clinical development of aclidinium.”

Chairman and chief executive of Almirall Dr Jorge Gallardo said the clinical data suggested aclidinium could be a valuable therapy and his company remained committed to its partnership with Forest.

COPD normally begins in smokers over 40 who have done so for more than 20 years; progressive breathing difficulties and the risk of heart failure due to lowered oxygen levels.
