ProStrakan: TRT shows positive results in diabetic men

ProStrakan has announced the results of a new study showing the improvement of insulin sensitivity and sexual function in hypogonadal men suffering from metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes treated with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).

In the study, the men were administered with two per cent testosterone gel with their insulin sensitivity assessed as the primary endpoint at six and 12 months.

The secondary endpoint of the trial covered safety and tolerability, changes in abdominal obesity, glycaemic control, lipid profile, cardiovascular events and sexual function.

According to the study results, a significant improvement in insulin sensitivity was seen in those patients using the testosterone gel, with these men also experiencing a significant improvement in sexual function at six and 12 months.

Nigel Atherton, vice-president of global development at ProStrakan, said: “The understanding of the medical benefits of TRT in hypogonadal males is growing rapidly.

“The beneficial effects of TRT may extend beyond treatment of typical hypogonadal symptoms associated with testosterone deficiency to potentially impact other medically significant conditions such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.”

He added the announcement of these results adds to the knowledge base in this area and underlines the importance of proper diagnosis and treatment of male hypogonadism.

Last month, ProStrakan announced it was “well on track” to add to its EU infrastructure with Tostran (testosterone two per cent gel) by re-filing the drug with the US Food and Drug Administration in the third quarter of this year.
