Pfizer to showcase Alzheimer’s product pipeline

15th July 2008

Pfizer has announced plans to showcase its Alzheimer’s research and product pipeline at an upcoming conference on the disease.

The company will present nine abstracts from its research and development programme in this area at the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease of the Alzheimer’s Association being held in Chicago at the end of the month.

Information to be presented at the meeting includes data on receptor for advanced glycation end-product antagonist modulators and humanised anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies.

Investigational compounds from Pfizer target a number of pathways to combat beta amyloid, amyloid plaques, chronic inflammation of neurons and loss of function across the synapses between neurons.

Dr Liam Ratcliffe, senior vice president and head of neuroscience at Pfizer, said: “Our scientists are working to develop new medicines that improve memory and other cognitive function, and importantly halt or significantly slow the progression of the disease.”

He added the company is working on approaches to the disease that could result in earlier and improved diagnosis for patients.

Earlier this month, a study from the Alzheimer’s Society revealed that high blood pressure can increase the risk of contracting dementia by up to 600 per cent.
