Medtronic announces results of CGM study

11th September 2008

Medtronic has announced the publication of the results of the largest ever continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

It showed that Personal CGM therapy significantly lowers the average blood glucose levels of adult type 1 diabetes patients.

Medtronic said these results validate the clinical evidence in support of Personal CGM therapy and its ability to improve the control of A1c and diabetes management.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)-funded study found that patients using the therapy saw a 0.53 per cent absolute reduction in A1c compared to the control group, without an increase in severe hypoglycemia.

Medtronic noted that younger patients did not experience a significant reduction in A1c, but added that these individuals did not use the Personal CGM device as often as prescribed.

Chris O’Connell, president of the diabetes business at Medtronic, said: “Medtronic applauds the JDRF for funding studies that will build on the growing body of evidence in support of Personal CGM therapy to improve diabetes outcomes.”

He added that the trial results show patients can achieve improved diabetes control without being fearful of the increased risk of hypoglycemia.

In July 2008, Medtronic finalised the deal to purchase Restore Medical for a total sum of around $29 million (16.5 million pounds).
