Novo Nordisk: Levemir demonstrates significant weight loss

Novo Nordisk has announced the presentation of study data at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes showing that Levemir (insulin detemir [rDNA origin] injection) induces significant weight loss in obese patients.

The compound also showed 24-hour duration of action in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Results from other studies announced at the event found the compound could lead to significant weight loss in insulin-naive patients with type 2 diabetes.

Levemir was also found to offer a similar response as glargine in blood glucose control, with no diabetes-related pharmacy costs or difference in daily average consumption.

Professor Helene Hanaire of Hospital Rangueil in Toulouse, France, said: “This data confirms that Levemir provides a significant weight benefit for overweight or obese patients who are being initiated into insulin treatment.”

She added this weight advantage is important as weight gain is a common barrier against insulin initiation in patients.

Professor Hanaire also noted Levemir need only be taken once daily, making it a convenient treatment option for overweight or obese patients requiring insulin.

In June 2007, Novo Nordisk announced the results of a study showing Levemir to provide a safe reduction in HbA1c in patients using self-adjusted dosing.
