Nalco joins Dow Jones Sustainability World Index
Nalco, an international provider of integrated water treatment services, chemicals and equipment, has been named as a new member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.
The index, which was launched in 1999, monitors the financial performance of the world’s top sustainability-driven companies.
Firms are measured on their corporate, economic, environmental and social performance. Issues such as corporate governance, risk management, climate change mitigation, supply chain management and labour practices are also scrutinised.
In total, the Sustainability World Index will list 320 companies in 2008-09, with Nalco being one of 33 new additions.
Nalco chairman, president and chief executive officer Erik Fyrwald said the company works to improve sustainability by providing cleaner water, helping to cut the industrial use of fresh water and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"We are pleased to see this international recognition of our continuing efforts to help sustain our planet," he said.
Nalco employs around 11,500 people in operations spanning 130 countries. In July, it posted a 9.8 per cent increase in its second quarter revenues to $1.066 billion (594.6 million pounds), along with a 5.7 per cent rise in net earnings to $44.2 billion.
