Boehringer Ingelheim reports on cell cycle kinase inhibitor

Boehringer Ingelheim’s new cell cycle kinase inhibitor BI 6727 has shown “encouraging” results in phase I clinical trails in individuals with advanced tumours who have not responded to other treatments, the company has announced.

It states the data is testament to Boehringer Ingelheim’s “ongoing commitment” to research and development of innovative treatments for cancer in areas of unmet need.

The company continues to note its research efforts are conducted in three main areas, which are signal transduction inhibition, angiokinase inhibition and cell cycle kinase inhibition – under which 6727 falls.

Professor Patrick Schoffski, lead investigator in the trial, states the results of the research indicate an exciting advance.

He adds: “Compelling new science in fields such as cell cycle kinase inhibition brings us a step closer to better understanding the multiple pathways involved in the growth and spread of tumours and will hopefully provide us with better treatments to add to the armoury against this deadly disease.”

Continuing, he notes the drug can be safely administered to patients with advanced solid tumours and that it “certainly” warrants further investigation.

In recent days, Boehringer Ingelheim announced patients and physicians could soon have new treatments for Type 2 diabetes after it began research and development in the area.
