3M is supporting Road Safety Week by running a survey on in-car distractions, the technology company said.
The use of hands-free mobile phones is one subject highlighted by the safety campaign, which is running until Sunday (November 16th).
Research undertaken by the Transport Research Laboratory found using a hands-free kit while at the wheel is more likely to lengthen reaction times more than consuming the legal limit of alcohol.
3M took the decision of banning its employees from using hands-free kits while driving after hearing statistics such as this action which shows "the importance [the company] places on its employees’ welfare and safety", according to Mary Williams OBE, chief executive of Brake, the campaign’s backer.
"We hope other responsible employers will follow their lead", she added.
The results of 3M’s survey will be published in the new year.
