Next phase of modernisation proposals launched

The next phase of UK-wide proposals to modernise scientific careers in the NHS was launched today.

The commencing of the project follows a consultative document, published by four health departments.

Proposals intended in the launch are set to enable healthcare scientists to support safer, higher quality and more effective treatment.

It is hoped the experts will be able to develop as leaders in the innovation, research and development in frontline care.

Health secretary Alan Johnson commented science and innovation are important functions for the NHS and underpin 80 per cent of clinical decisions for patients.

He added: “These proposals will allow the NHS to harness the skills of scientists and ensure that they are leaders, partners and practitioners in care.”

Professor Sue Hill, who is responsible for the consultation, said: “The vision for healthcare science is of a world class workforce integral to multi-professional teams.”

The proposals outlined in the document have been based on feedback on the proposed model from over 3,000 stakeholders in the UK.

Additionally, it is set to see a transformation of healthcare science careers – supported by new training programmes and education, which are planned to deliver improved benefits for patients, employers and health commissioners.
