Boston Scientific renal stent approved

Boston Scientific’s Express SD Renal Monorail Premounted Stent System has been approved for use, it emerged this week.

According to the company, it is the first of its kind for renal arteries to be given the green light for use by the Food and Drug Administration.

The stent is also the first to be approved for the provision of proximal end support.

It is designed for use as an adjunct to percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty, which is a treatment for renal artery disease or narrowing of the kidneys’ main blood supply.

The group’s president and chief executive officer Jim Tobin said the stent’s approval was an “important step” in helping doctors manage renal artery disease.

“With the addition of the Express SD Renal Stent, Boston Scientific can now offer customers the industry’s leading portfolio of products for endovascular treatment of this disease,” he added.

Last month, it was announced that another of the medical product manufacturer’s developments had received approval.

The Apex PTCA Dilation Catheter is described as a high-performance balloon catheter for the specific use of treating atherosclerotic lesions.
