Abbott introduces diagnostic HPV test
Abbott has announced the introduction of a real-time polymerase chain reaction-based diagnostic test in Europe.
The product – for the treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV) – is said to be able to identify patients who have specific viral genotypes that are known to be a precursor to cervical cancer.
Jack Cuzick, professor of epidemiology at Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, described the test as a “major advance”.
He said: “Women with abnormal ? smear test results will know right away if they are at risk.”
Professor Cuzick added a negative result would “assure them with almost 100 per cent certainty that cervical cancer will not occur in the next few years”.
He went on to note the assay test could save time and money for follow-up testing.
The manufacturer says the assay test detects the 14 highest risk HPV genotypes in patients, along with the 16 and 18 kind of genotypes – which contribute towards 70 per cent of cervical cancer cases.
Earlier this week, Abbott announced it was acquiring Advanced Medical Optics for $22 (15.02 pounds) per share in cash.
The total transaction value is expected to reach around $2.8 billion.
