Philips and Hansen Medical partner in treatment

16th January 2009

Philips has said it is to partner Hansen Medical in development and cooperation agreements.

The collaboration will see the progression of products to simplify cardiac procedures in diagnosing and treating arrhythmias.

As a result, Philips says the partnership will enable the creation of “integrated product solutions” by combining its Allura Xper X-ray system with its partner’s Sensei Robotic Catheter System.

The company added it hoped the technology would enable greater speed and efficiency in procedures performed by electrophysiologists.

Vice-president and general manager of electrophysiology for Philips Healthcare Gerard Winkels said the agreement was an “important step”.

He added: “By collaborating with best-in-class companies such as Hansen Medical, we’re able to develop comprehensive solutions designed around the needs of the electrophysiologist.”

Cardiac arrhythmias currently affect 4.5 million people in Europe and can lead to conditions including stroke and heart failure.

Last month, Philips announced the acquisition of Italian-based Medel’s aerosol therapy business.

The deal also saw the company obtaining a manufacturing facility.
