Strategy outlines improvements to learning disability care

A report has been published by the Department of Health that states the organisation’s aims to support people with learning disabilities.

Presented by secretary of state for health Alan Johnson, Valuing People Now – A Three-Year Strategy for People with Learning Disabilities outlines ways to improve training and commissioning of services, along with strengthening local structures.

The report follows a consultation with over 10,000 people and declares progress would be reviewed annually.

Mr Johnson says people suffering from such conditions should be “supported to live, full, independent lives”.

He added: “This strategy will help make that a reality and I urge the NHS, local authorities and public services to take this opportunity to make real progress to transform people’s lives.”

Other aims in the report include the ensuring of people with learning disabilities are able to have relationships and become parents.

Last month, the NHS Pathology Services published a review outlining its objectives in improving its services.

Aims announced including improving test turnaround times and developing networks with a single integrated management structure.
