GlaxoSmithKline and Theravance unveil latest trial results

5th February 2009

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Theravance have revealed the latest test results on the collaboration’s inhaled corticosteroid fluticasone furoate asthma treatment.

Taken once a day, the therapy was assessed for its safety and efficacy levels in 1,800 patients who were suffering mild, moderate or severe strains of the condition.

Results of the tests revealed “statistically significant improvements” in patients’ lung function, in comparison to those taking a placebo.

Darrell Baker, senior vice-president of GSK’s Respiratory Medicines Development Centre, said the study revealed the treatment was “efficacious” and showed promise.

He continued: “These outcomes, combined with the positive findings from the recent studies of the long-acting beta agonist ‘444, bring us a step closer to ? future studies.”

Mr Baker added the news would be important to patients “where compliance and asthma control are difficult”.

In December, GSK announced it had formed a collaboration with Archemix to develop aptamers.

The therapies would be used for treatment of inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis.
