Wyeth Pharmaceuticals reaches milestone with Tygacil approval

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals’ Tygacil approval for the treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) is an important milestone for the company, it has asserted.

Previously, the drug was permitted for use in adults with complicated intra-abdominal infections, as well as the treatment for complicated skin and structure infections by the Food and Drug Administration in 2005.

Now the organisation has authorised the medication to be used in CABP caused by susceptible strains of indicated pathogens.

“The approval of this new indication is timely,” remarked senior vice-president of the global medical affairs division of the company Dr Joseph Camardo. “Antibiotic resistance continues to grow and new antimicrobials are needed.”

On April 29th, the research-driven pharmaceutical company will announce its financial results for the first quarter of 2009.

Along with research analysts, the firm will hold a 45-minute conference call which will be webcast live on its investor relations website.

Earlier this month, Wyeth presented at the SG Cowen & Co Annual Healthcare Conference. President of the firm Mikael Dolsten gave a talk which was also presented live on the company’s website.
