Abbott a leader in stent technology, it asserts

Abbott is on the front line of innovative stent technology, it has stated.

This comment came from the company’s executive vice-president John M Capek after it was announced one of its latest products will be examined in the next stage of a clinical trial.

In order to further examine the safety and performance of the firm’s fully bioabsorbable drug eluting coronary stent, around 80 patients at ten centres across Europe, Australia and New Zealand will take part in the study.

The previous investigation demonstrated that the medical device could successfully treat coronary artery disease and showed positive signs of its effectiveness 24 months after the study had started.

In this trial, the stent will incorporate design enhancements to improve deliverability and vessel support.

Dr Capek asserted he believes the stent is on track to become a real clinical option for patients.

“Abbott is the furthest ahead in its clinical programs to bring a bioabsorbable drug eluting device to patients,” he commented.

“The company is committed to continuing to invest in this promising technology and to bring it to market as soon as possible.”
