Lilly wants to market Byetta soon

27th March 2009

Lilly wants to bring Byetta to the market as soon as possible.

The firm partnered Alkermes to conduct a series of clinical studies and found the treatment does not increase the risk of cardiovascular risk when used to manage type two diabetes.

Professor Rury Holman, director of diabetes trial unit at Oxford University, explained there is a need for therapies that can reduce the excess cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with type two diabetes.

He noted the trials of exenatide ? the active ingredient in Byetta ? were to examine the danger of these problems. Now the element will be put forward for further phase III clinical trials.

David Vondle, Lilly’s global brand development leader, remarked the firm’s short-term goal is to release the treatment for use.

“In the long term, we are executing on a clinical trial program aimed to show superiority of exenatide once weekly over other diabetes medications,” he commented.

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration approved the pharmaceutical company’s drug Symbyax to aid patients with treatment-resistant depression.
