Takeda describes MLN4924 discovery

Takeda’s oncology company Millennium has described the discovery of the small molecule MLN4924 in an article in the journal Nature.

The data issued shows the molecule is an inhibitor of the NEDD8-Activating Enzyme and can inhibit tumour growth in humans.

It works by altering pathways that allows the disease to develop, resulting in cancer cell death.

Lead author of the study Dr Teresa A Soucy commented: “MLN4924 has potential in treating various types of cancer by selectively inducing apoptosis in cancer cells in in-vivo animal models and in-vitro cell assays.”

The work highlights the company’s role in homeostasis research and drug discovery, added chief scientific officer of Millennium Dr Joseph B Bolen.

Last month, Takeda announced it had created a number of corporate-level roles to help the company maximise the market potential of new products, as well as the firm’s global presence.

As part of the restructure, Dr Shigenori Ohkawa has been appointed as chief scientific officer and Alan Mackenzie will serve in the role as executive vice-president international operations.
