Applied Biosystems unveils DNA lab

A new DNA laboratory has been unveiled by Applied Biosystems (AB), which has collaborated with the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) to create it.

Research on the transference of cheetah genes, genetic variation and geographical patterns will be focused on at the site, as well as a genetic monitoring programme that has been developed to estimate populations of the wild cat in Namibia – where the facility is situated – and home-range countries.

AB is to provide reagents and genetic analysis systems that will enable CCF to begin activities and help maximise the chance of the cheetah’s long-term survival.

Kip Miller is president of Life Technologies – of which AB is a division – and said the conservation effort shows what unique principles genetic analyses can be used for.

Dr Laurie Marker, executive director of CCF, added: "With wildlife being such an important part of all Namibians’ lives, having the opportunity to train the future African scientists to understand and manage their wildlife is essential."

Life Technologies was created when AB and Invitrogen merged.
