Innovation key to improve NHS, it is claimed
Concentrating on innovation to drive quality and production in the NHS will be a prime focus this year, it has been claimed.
David Nicholson, chief executive of the public health body, voiced his gratitude to staff for working hard in the last 12 months to reduce waiting times, reduce hospital infection rates and extend GP opening hours.
Although last year’s targets have been met, he asserted more has to be done to improve patient care.
Speaking at the annual NHS Chief Executive’s Conference, Mr Nicholson remarked there is an opportunity to shape the future by organising the current procedures to ensure services are delivered to a high standard.
“Evidence from other countries and industries has shown us that improving quality and productivity needs to be linked by innovation driving sustained improvements across the system,” he said.
Last week, the Department of Health published a list of over 200 indicators to help improve the quality of care in the NHS.
Patient safety, their experience and the effectiveness of services are all key areas included.
Health minister Lord Darzi noted the indicators aim to challenge employees to improve the assistance they give to the public.
