Almirall’s almotriptan approved for adolescent migraines

Almirall has received approval for the first triptan to treat adolescents suffering from migraines.

The new indication for the use of almotriptan (Axert/Almogran) in patients aged between 12 and 17 with the condition has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In 2001, it was accepted by the regulatory body to aid adults with this severe type of headache and Ortho-McNeil Janssen Pharmaceuticals has marketed the product through a licence-out agreement.

Almirall explained this recent news is an important step for the company.

The firm commented: “It demonstrates ? [our] commitment to bring medication to those adolescents who suffer from migraines and who, until now, had no FDA-approved migraine-specific treatment option.”

In other news, Almirall has submitted regulatory files to the relevant bodies in the UK and Spain seeking approval of Sativex to treat spasticity due to multiple sclerosis.

The submission follows positive results from phase III clinical trials of the drug that showed it could be effective in aiding this medical problem.
