Boehringer Ingelheim discusses Parkinson’s disease treatment

Boehringer Ingelheim’s Mirapexin/Sifrol (pramipexole) has been found to be effective at treating both early and advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease.

Data from trials showed the once-daily, extended release formulation supported previous investigations revealing it was safe, effective and tolerable.

There were also notable benefits for patients during the period at the end of the dosing interval of reduced motor functioning, explained lead investigator of the study Professor Anthony Schapira.

He noted the patients and physicians welcomed the fact only a single administration of the drug was required throughout the day.

Professor Schapira commented: “Having a once-daily pill is especially important for those in an advanced stage of the disease when the need for multiple medications often increases.”

Commenting on earlier studies of the drug in April, Dr Werner Poewe asserted it is important to provide sufferers of Parkinson’s disease a therapy regime that suits their individual needs.

He noted every patient has a different range of symptoms and requirements.

Pramipexole was first approved in 1997 to aid the signs and symptoms of the illness.
