Plans to improve sexual health in Wales discussed

New proposals to improve sexual health in Wales will complement the work already being done to help young people deal with certain issues, it has been claimed.

Since its previous strategy was published in 2001, the Welsh assembly government has managed to tackle the number of patients being diagnosed with gonorrhoea or chlamydia.

The human papillomavirus vaccine has also been introduced and health clinics have improved access to treatments, support and advice.

However, despite the achievements, the body noted more still needs to be done.

Plans released today (June 15th), outline objectives to reduce the number of unintended pregnacies and cases of sexually transmitted diseases ? including HIV/Aids.

Health minister Edwina Hart asserted the proposals show the assembly’s commitment to improve services.

“A key component of this new document is the importance of educating people of the need for a greater awareness of good sexual health and the dangers associated with unprotected sex,” she said.

The Department of Health recently launched the NHS Teen LifeCheck website aimed at adolescents.

As well as containing information about sexual health, drugs and smoking, it will include advice about relationships, stress and self-esteem.
