Medtronic to enrol patients worldwide in study

Medtronic has announced it will enrol participants from around the world in a monitoring resynchronisation in cardiac patients trial.

The company explained over 22 million people suffer from heart failure globally and now its study aims to compare disease management strategies for these individuals.

Utilising state-of-of-the-art wireless cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillators equipped with OptiVol fluid status monitoring and CareAlert Notifications, the research aims to demonstrate how remote monitoring of patients is more beneficial than solely relying in-office visits.

The system will allow physicians to be notified via a text message or email when certain pre-programmed thresholds are crossed, meaning there is no need for them to visit the patient to make a diagnoses.

One of the principle investigators Dr Haran Burri commented: “The … trial will assess the efficacy of remote monitoring to enable earlier detection of clinical events.”

He concluded this would allow medical professionals to make appropriate treatment decisions based on patient and device data.

Medtronic also announced this week it was launching two worldwide clinical studies to examine medical device interventions for strokes.
