Ferring’s fertilisation therapy found to be cost-effective

Ferring’s Menopur (highly-purified human menopausal gonatropin or HP-hMG) has been found to be a cost-effective therapy for patients struggling to conceive naturally.

Data showed the in-vitro fertilisation treatment was better value for money compared to recombinant follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH), meaning it could be a more beneficial option for a fixed healthcare budget.

Report investigator Dr Jaro Wex explained discussions about funding such services up until recently have been hindered by the lack of economic studies that have been carried out into the different options.

“The study showed that HP-hMG is a more attractive [method] ? within a fixed budget, as it offers considerable cost savings over rFSH, not only in terms of costs per treatment cycle, but also in costs per live births,” he remarked.

Findings from the research will be presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology congress, which will be held later this year.

Meanwhile, the company has announced its second Ferring Research Infertility and Gynaecology Grant. Institutions can submit applications on the theme of “reducing multiple pregnancies following infertility treatment” to be considered for the prize.
