GlaxoSmithKline cervical cancer vaccine receives WHO prequalification
GlaxoSmithKline’s cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix has received prequalification from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The company explained that the move will help speed global access to the therapy because WHO prequalification is necessary for agencies operating under the United Nations and Gavi Alliance to buy it.
Commenting on the move, Jean Stephenne, president of GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, said that Cervarix has the potential to save “millions” of lives around the globe, as long as it can reach those who most need it.
“That is why GlaxoSmithKline rapidly applied for WHO prequalification of Cervarix,” he explained.
“And that is why we’re exploring a variety of distribution partnerships to ensure Cervarix will protect women and girls around the globe.”
GlaxoSmithKline concluded by noting that the regulatory process that has resulted in Cervarix receiving prequalification began almost two years ago.
The results of a study relating to the efficacy of Cervarix was published in the Lancet earlier this month.
