Pfizer Animal Health may be eyed by “world’s biggest drugmakers”

Pfizer Animal Health’s products may be tempting for four of the “world’s biggest drugmakers”, it has been asserted.

An article for Bloomberg by Shannon Pettypiece states that as revenue from canine cancer treatment, flea medicines and cattle vaccines “outpaces human drugs”, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bayer, Lilly and Novartis may seek to make purchases from the firm.

Bill Kridel, managing director for Ferghana Partners Group, which advises companies on mergers and acquisitions, told the online news provider that Pfizer Animal Health’s animal products are likely to draw interest from each of the companies.

Citing figures from IMS Health, the site noted that human drug sales rose by 1.3 per cent last year to $291 billion (176 billion pounds).

Meanwhile, numbers from Vetnosis suggest that animal medicines increased by 7.2 per cent to $19.2 billion.

“Animal products tend to have very nice margins, there’s much lower threat of generic competition and there’s a lot of brand loyalty,” said David Moskowitz, an analyst with Caris & Co, in an interview with the site.

Pfizer Animal Health can trace its roots back to 1849, when Pfizer was founded.
