Abbott to team with Pfizer for lung cancer therapy study

Abbot has announced that it will collaborate with Pfizer in the development of a molecular diagnostic test intended to screen non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumors for the presence of gene rearrangements.

The firms will work together to select patients suitable for the treatment. Criteria includes the possession of a particular genetic translocation (rearrangement) known to be found in NSCLC tumors and various other cancers.

Stafford O’Kelly, head of Abbott’s molecular diagnostics business, explained: “Abbott is a leader in the development and commercialisation of companion diagnostics and we’re delighted to collaborate with Pfizer, a leader in cancer therapeutics.”

As part of the contract, Abbott will develop a companion diagnostic test designed to establish an individuals’ genetic status.

Earlier this month, Abbott revealed that its post-approval study for XIENCE V will continue for longer than initially intended so it could encompass a wider cross-section of participants.
