Apotex delivers second shipment of AIDS drug to Africa

Apotex has revealed that a second shipment of its generic triple-combination AIDS drug Apo-TriAvir has been sent to Rwanda in Africa.

The batch has been sent as part of Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime (CAMR), which was set up around five years ago with the objective of providing more affordable life-saving generic to developing countries.

Apotex is the only firm to have signed up to the project so far and sent the first shipment of drugs in September of last year.

Jack Kay, president and chief operating officer of the organisation, said: “Apotex has already made a commitment to develop and produce a pediatric AIDS drug which would save thousands of children suffering from this disease.”

Apotex was founded in 1974 and currently employs more than 6,800 people in research, development, manufacturing and distribution facilities around the world.

It has subsidiaries and licensing agreements in countries such as the UK, Australia, Italy, and the Netherlands.
