Lupin grants Salix the rights to Rifaximin

12th October 2009

Lupin has announced that it has granted Salix Pharmaceuticals the exclusive rights to its bioadhesive drug delivery technology for use with Rifaximin.

The agreement will see the two firms work together on the development and commercialisation of an extended release product that incorporates Rifaximin and utilises Lupin’s proprietary bioadhesive technology.

Lupin and Salix have also entered into an exclusive agreement for the supply of the Rifaximin active pharmaceutical ingredient, with the latter firm making a $5 million (3.16 million-pound) upfront payment and additional regulatory milestone payments to Lupin.

“This formulation coupled with Salix’s commercialisation capabilities gives us the opportunity to jointly bring a great product to the marketplace. Importantly, this alliance further validates Lupin’s increasing capabilities in the drug delivery space,” explained Nilesh Gupta, company president and executive director of Lupin.

Lupin specialises in the development and marketing of affordable generic and branded formulations in a wide variety of markets across the world.
