Boehringer Ingelheim HSDD drug passes testing phase

Boehringer Ingelheim drug flibanserin has passed the phase III trials stage and has demonstrated the ability to ease the stresses associated with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).

The trial found that doses of 100 mg taken once a day at bedtime noticeably increased the number of satisfying sexual events and sexual desire in patients suffering from HSDD.

Flibanserin is currently undergoing development and is intended for use in pre-menopausal females.

The firm highlights that HSDD is the cause of sexual desire loss in women of this age group and can lead to stress within their relationships.

Professor Rossella Nappi, primary investigator of the European trial, stated: “Despite studies demonstrating that HSDD is a common form of female sexual dysfunction, there is currently no approved prescription treatment for pre-menopausal women suffering from the condition.”

Last month, Boehringer Ingelheim announced the winner of the Heinrich Wieland Prize 2009, which it sponsors.
