Cook Medical publishes self-expanding metal stents trial results

Cook Medical has published the results of a major trial into self-expanding metal stents.

In a statement, the organisation explained that the study was the biggest global randomised trial of the medical devices in the treatment of biliary obstructions.

The company said that the study, which is known as Mozart, was published in the journal Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and found that the stents provide a greater level of clinical efficacy and patient care when compared with alternative solutions.

Dr Raj J Shah, a lead investigator on the study, said: “The significance of this study is defined not only by its scope and global reach, but also the noteworthy findings.”

It was found that the effectiveness of Cook Medical’s non-foreshortening nitinol Zilver biliary stent parallels that of Boston Scientific’s Wallstent.

Last month, Cook Medical gave surgeons their first glimpse of its new uterine manipulator/injectors at the 38th Global Congress of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.
