St Jude Medical heart treatment device backed by trial data

St Jude Medical’s new system for assisting patients in regulating their heart disease treatment has demonstrated its efficacy in a new trial.

The medical technology firm’s left atrial pressure management system involves the implantation of a sensor to allow patients to monitor and adjust their medication regimes in accordance with physicians.

It was found in the new study that patients using this system demonstrated a better chance of avoiding cardiac and neurological events and experienced a better quality of life as a result.

Dr Mark Carlson, chief medical officer and senior vice-president of research and clinical affairs for St Jude Medical’s cardiac rhythm management division, described the findings as a potentially significant development.

He said it shows that “left atrial pressure monitoring, linked to a self-management strategy, can facilitate more optimal heart failure therapy and reduction of heart failure events”.

Earlier this week, the company received CE Mark accreditation for its new Trifecta valve, which is the first pericardial aortic-stented tissue valve to be released by the firm.
