Boston Scientific reports positive trial results for Taxus stents

Boston Scientific has underlined the advantages of its Taxus stent technology by publishing positive results from a new clinical trial.

The medical device company’s Taxus Express stents were trialled in a one-year study to establish their advantages over bare-metal stents in promoting heart health among diabetes patients.

It was found that Boston Scientific’s devices were able to reduce the likelihood of ischemia-driven target lesion revascularisation and binary in-stent restenosis when compared to the control stents.

Dr Keith Dawkins, senior vice-president and chief medical officer for Boston Scientific, described these findings as being demonstrative of “impressive efficacy benefits”.

He added: “This study provides important data to physicians regarding the use of drug-eluting stents in high-risk acute myocardial infarction patients, especially those with diabetes, during the early hours of a heart attack.”

Last month, the company reported a year-on-year increase in sales revenue during the final fiscal quarter of 2009, with strong coronary stent sales cited as a contributing factor.
