Biogen Idec commences enrolment for multiple sclerosis drug trial

Biogen Idec and its collaborative partner Elan have begun enrolment for a new phase IIIb clinical trial of their multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment Tysabri.

The companies have signed up the first of an expected 1,800 patients for the international study, which hopes to evaluate the advantages of switching from Copaxone and Rebif treatments to Tysabri.

It will also gauge whether incorporating the drug into treatment algorithms early yields benefits, thus providing further information on the potential use of the compound.

Dr Alfred Sandrock, senior vice-president of neurology research and development at Biogen Idec, expressed confidence that its new drug represents a “compelling treatment option”.

He added: “By evaluating Tysabri against other MS treatments, our goal is to provide the data needed to make better treatment decisions and improve patients’ lives.”

Earlier this week, the company appointed Dr Eric Rowinsky and Dr Stephen Sherwin to its board of directors as part of an agreement with investment group Icahn Partners.
