Medtronic launches new handpiece for sinusitis system
Medtronic has introduced a frontal handpiece designed to function with its Hydrodebrider system for sinusitis treatment.
The new device connects with the powered endoscopic irrigation system to allow it to be used for removing bacteria from the frontal sinuses.
Combined with the range provided by the unit’s standard handpiece, this means the Hydrodebrider system can now treat the frontal, maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses.
Dr Bryan Jones, microbiologist and associate product manager for rhinology in the ear, nose and throat division at Medtronic, said this made the system a more versatile tool for use against a difficult-to-treat condition.
He added: “The new frontal handpiece enables access for direct powered irrigation of the frontal sinuses, giving surgeons additional flexibility in the treatment of patients with chronic sinusitis.”
Last week, the company published clinical trial data for its faecal incontinence system InterStim, which supported the device’s safety and efficacy.
