‘Spare tyre’ health hazard causing harmful hormones
A charity campaign is warning of the health hazards of having a “spare tyre, beer belly or muffin top” after it was found that many people are ignorant of the harmful hormones they cause.
The Active Fat survey revealed that 97 per cent of people in the UK are unaware their larger waistlines are generating higher levels of oestrogen and excess chemicals in their stomachs.
Diabetes UK, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) have warned this ignorance of harmful hormones can lead to a greater risk of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director for the BHF, said: “Wrapping a tape measure around your middle takes just a few seconds, but it could be your vital first step towards a healthier future.”
The campaign is being supported by former Apprentice contestant Claire Young, who also stated that “small, everyday” lifestyle changes can play a key role in improving health.
