CryoLife purchases new surgical adhesive patent
CryoLife is to expand its offering of surgical adhesive products following the purchase of the patent for a new formulation.
The company, which is responsible for the BioGlue range, will add US patent 6,329,337 to its protein hydrogel patent portfolio to complement its existing range of adhesive products.
This patent pertains to the formulation and use of recombinant human serum albumin and gluteraldehyde to create a new surgical glue.
CryoLife president and chief executive officer Steven Anderson expressed confidence that the addition of the product will strengthen its position in the market.
The company is already a leader in the sector thanks to the success of BioGlue, which has been used in more than 550,000 surgical procedures since its launch in 1998.
According to CryoLife’s most recent financial report in April 2010, the firm’s revenues in the first quarter of the year increased by 11 per cent compared to Q1 of 2009, thanks in part to improved sales of BioGlue and HemoStase.
