BVA calls for improved welfare labelling on meat products
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has called for the introduction of a Europe-wide labelling system on meat products which details the welfare of the animals involved.
It has recommended that the European Parliament implements a single clear label which provides welfare information on the animals’ entire lifespans, including production methods and means of slaughter.
This comes after the parliament earlier this week voted in favour of adding a requirement for meat from animals which were slaughtered without the use of stunning to be separately labelled.
Professor Bill Reilly, president of the BVA, welcomed this move, calling it a “huge step forward in improving the welfare of animals at slaughter”.
He added: “The more consumers understand these issues, the more consumer power can make a difference.”
Last month, attendees at the BVA Animal Welfare Foundation Discussion Forum highlighted a number of issues which it believes should be prioritised by the new government, including the care of exotic pets and farm animals.
