Pfizer’s Celebrex demonstrates efficacy in new study

Pfizer has highlighted newly-published data from a clinical trial which demonstrates the efficacy of Celebrex in reducing the risk of gastrointestinal conditions among arthritis patients.

New data from the Condor trial, published in the Lancet, showed that patients using the Pfizer drug experienced a lower incidence of upper and lower gastrointestinal events compared with patients taking diclofenac plus omeprazole.

This may be significant to the treatment of arthritis, as the adverse events associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for arthritis are considered a major clinical issue.

Dr Briggs Morrison, senior vice-president of clinical development at Pfizer’s primary care business unit, said: “We intend to continue to sponsor important outcomes studies like Condor, which can give healthcare providers valuable information when making treatment decisions.”

This week also saw Pfizer publish new clinical trial data demonstrating the safety and efficacy benefits of the ankylosing spondylitis drug Enbrel, when compared with the commonly-prescribed treatment sulphasalazine.
