Philips purchases Shanghai Apex Electronics
Philips has augmented its medical technology business with the acquisition of Shanghai Apex Electronics, which specialises in ultrasound transducers.
The deal, financial terms for which were not disclosed, allows Philips to add high-quality transducers to its portfolio of value-oriented medical products.
Transducers of this kind are essential determinants of image quality for ultrasound systems, which are often used for providing non-invasive analysis of soft tissue anatomy.
Steve Rusckowski, chief executive officer of Philips Healthcare, stated that the acquisition will specifically aid the company’s efforts to widen its offering of solutions for emerging markets.
He explained: “Strengthening our ultrasound capabilities in these markets is essential, as ultrasound is a critical yet affordable and mobile modality for early diagnosis and real-time imaging.”
Last month, Philips announced a new collaboration with SpineMark Corporation to create new spine care centres of excellence around the world, commencing with Spain, Turkey and the Netherlands in 2011.
